  2.                      Introduction to F-PROT
  3.                      ----------------------

  5. F-PROT is a fairly large package, intended to provide almost complete
  6. protection against computer viruses.  I admit that it is not the most
  7. user-friendly package around, but you will not find many other packages
  8. that are as powerful.  
  9.  
  10. I am currently finishing version 2.0, which will eliminate some of the most
  11. serious shortcomings in the current version.  2.0 will provide a friendlier
  12. user-interface, auto-install, faster searching, and several other neat
  13. features. 2.0 should be ready in early March.
  14.  
  15. It is a bit difficult to say how many different viruses the programs can
  16. handle but F-PROT recognizes 157 "families" of viruses and 250-300 "variants",
  17. depending on the definition of the term "virus variant".
  18.  
  19. The package is free of charge for personal use - for an individual
  20. just using it on a single computer (or two) belonging to him/her, although
  21. I will not refuse a contribution of $20 or so, if you want to support
  22. continued availability of the package.

  24. You are of course permitted to try out the package without paying for it,
  25. but I hope those who use it for an extended period will pay for its use, 
  26. as I am pricing the package as low as possible.

  28. F-PROT may be freely distributed outside of Iceland, provided it is not
  29. changed in any way.  In Iceland it is distributed as a commercial product,
  30. under a different name, with a printed manual and a higher level of support.
  31. I am currently looking for companies that might be interested in producing 
  32. a translated version of this package in various other countries.

  34. Starting with version 1.14, the pricing of F-PROT has been changed.  I do
  35. not offer the "one-time" fee option any more but I lowered the prices and
  36. switched to an annual fee instead.  This change will not affect those who
  37. have already paid the "one-time" fee.

  39.             Annual usage fees

  41. An individual using it on his own computer :  No charge
  42. Commercial users:                             US$ 1 per machine
  43. Educational institutions:                     US$ 0.75 per machine
  44.  
  45. The company or organization using F-PROT is expected to provide annually a
  46. rough estimate of the number of computers which the package will be used on,
  47. but an exact number is not necessary.

  49. There is a minimum fee of US$ 20.00, but the fee for organizations with more
  50. than 5000 computers will be negotiated in each case, as the cost per machine
  51. will be lower.

  53.             Annual update fee
  54.  
  55. The update fee is only intended to cover the fixed costs of the distribution
  56. of updates.  Options C, D and E just involve one disk sent by airmail.  If
  57. you need multiple disks please contact me for further information.

  59.         Option A: The organization obtains new versions by FTP or
  60.               other methods from an anti-virus archive.
  61.  
  62.               No charge.
  63.  
  64.         Option B: Updates are sent by E-mail, to a single
  65.               address, in the form of a xxencoded .ZIP file.
  66.  
  67.               Currently no charge, but this may change later.

  69.          Option C: Updated versions sent by mail whenever information
  70.               about new viruses is added.

  82. The fee will not change when version 2.0 of F-PROT is available, but may
  83. change in accordance with inflation.

  85. In addition, an "emergency service" is provided.  F-PROT may detect, but
  86. be unable to stop or remove a previously unknown virus.  If a new virus
  87. is found, and sent to the author of F-PROT, the relevant parts of the
  88. package will be updated as soon as possible and an updated version sent back.
  89. Normally the updated version would be available within 24 hours of the receipt
  90. of the new virus.

  92. Even though the prices given are in US dollars, you are free to send the
  93. payment in any other currency - my bank is happy to accept Yens, kronor,
  94. pounds, liras, marks etc.....Well, almost anything - not roubles, though.

  130.         F-XLOCK.EXE             Adds code to executable files, so they will
  131.                                  check (when run) if they have been infected.
  132.         F-UNLOCK.EXE            Removes the code described above.
  133.         F-XCHK.EXE              Only allows programs modified in this way

  135.         F-RUN.EXE               Used to run unmodified programs, when F-XCHK

  160. Finally - a disclaimer (well, sort of....)
  161.  
  162. The programs in this package have been thoroughly tested in Iceland and are
  163. (at the time of writing) used on about 1000 computers locally, but versions
  164. 1.07 and later have also been distributed internationally, so most of
  165. the "bugs" should have been detected and removed by now. I cannot, however,
  166. guarantee that every program will work perfectly with every possible
  167. combination of hardware and software.  Because many of the programs in the
  168. F-PROT package expect a very high level of compatibility, some problems could
  169. arise on machines not "100% IBM compatible".

  171. As far as I know the programs are free of bugs, but they are not perfect,
  172. and any suggestions for improvement are appreciated.
